FAMILY WORKSHOP – CONDUCTING A SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION:

Parents of all Introduction to Biology/Chemistry I students are invited to participate in an optional session for those who want to know more information about their son’s required Independent Science Investigation.  The workshop will be held on Monday, December 19 from 4:30 to 5:45 pm in the Boys’ Latin Dining Hall.  Attendees will have the chance to learn more about collecting data and designing a testable science experiment.  They will also discuss possible challenges and learning opportunities students may have with this project.  Please RSVP to our Science Department Chair, Mr. Smith, at jsmith@boyslatin.org if you plan to attend.

WINTER BREAK REMINDER:

December 20 will be a “Friday” schedule at Boys’ Latin; all students will be dismissed at 3:00 pm.  School will re-open on Wednesday, January 4.  Enjoy the winter break and holidays!

COLLEGE SWEATSHIRT/T-SHIRT DAY:

The Principal’s Advisory Committee of Boys’ Latin will host its first College T-Shirt/Sweatshirt Day on Tuesday, December 20.  For a donation of $1, students can represent their favorite college by wearing the college sweatshirt or t-shirt (standard uniform slacks, belts, shoes, and socks are still required).  All proceeds will benefit Boys’ Latin student programs.  Students wearing college gear should be prepared to donate $1 upon entering the building on Tuesday, December 20 (otherwise, full uniforms are required).

EFN MEETING:

Don’t forget to join us for the January 5 EFN meeting.  Faculty members will join us to address questions families may have about senior year deadlines, trips, and dues.

LEARNING ON THE GO:

Boys’ Latin is one of 20 schools and school districts nationwide selected for a special program authorized by the Federal Communications Commission.  Through this program, Boys’ Latin students (grades 10 -12) will receive a T-Mobile Broadband Card that will enable them to access the internet at home or at any other location.  Students will receive the guidelines for use of the broadband cards in homeroom.  The signature of the student and parent or guardian is required to receive the broadband device.  Please discuss with your child the importance of adhering to the guidelines established for safe use of this newly available technology.  We are excited that our students will have greater access to an important learning tool.  Distribution of the broadband cards begins next week and will run through January.

PSAT SCORE SHEETS:

Sophomores and Juniors received their PSAT scores and test booklets in school on Wednesday.  The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT, and it predicts how students will score on the SAT if they were to take it now.  Students are encouraged to measure their PSAT scores with the average SAT scores of students admitted to the colleges of their choice.  The best way for students to improve their scores is to do practice questions; students have access to a free SAT prep course on Family Connections.  Please contact Ms. Bonner (hbonner@boyslatin.org) if you have any questions about student scores or future steps.  Sophomores and Juniors take the PSAT every October at Boys’ Latin.

COLLEGE AND SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CLINICS:

PhillyGoes2College is partnering with the Gallery College Access Center to offer free college and scholarship application clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4-6 PM, starting January 17th, at the College Access Center. This is a great opportunity for high schools students to get ongoing support while they complete applications for college or scholarships.   The Gallery College Access Center is located at 9th and Market in the far east side of the Gallery.  These clinics are open to all high school students, but registration is required.  To Register email capgallerywkshps@philaedfund.org with the date of the workshop you wish to attend, the title of the workshop (Application and Essay), as well as your name, email address, home address, and telephone number.  Call PhillyGoes2College at 215-686-0315 with any questions.
