ULTIMATE WARRIORS: Boys’ Latin was proud to announce its first trimester Ultimate Warriors from the junior and senior classes at this week’s Honors Convocation. The following students were recognized: Malik Barnes, Avery Brown, Shyheim Cousins, Oumar Diawara , Hakim Diggins, Sam Drummond, Bahir Eley, Richard Jones, Ladd Loper, Jonathan Mcdowell, Jared Smith, Carlos Taylor, Amir Tucker, Matthew Williams, Percy Thomas, Brian Solomon, Ladd Loper, Shaquan Battle, Donier Cook, Shane Gillings, Andre Inniss, Brennen Malone, Ryan McCRay, Tahir Perlote, Mark Pierson, Deion Pugh, James Rouse, Joshua Shepard, and Anthony Walter. Ultimate Warriors are selected based on their exemplary adherence to the core values of Boys’ Latin – Curiosity, Compassion, Perseverance, Integrity, and Courage.
HAVERFORD COLLEGE MAST PROGRAM: Boys’ Latin is proud to announce that Jason Footes, Alec Stith, Clifford Jordan, Kenneth Bourne. And Tyler McColley were accepted into the Haverford College Mentoring and Student Teaching (MAST) program. This program offers high school students the opportunity to develop a greater appreciation for the sciences and writing. College students will act as mentors and role models for the students in the program.
SCIENCE SPEAKER SERIES: Dr. William Singleton, a veterinarian and president of Animal Care Training Services (ACTS), will visit Boys' Latin on Tuesday, January 17, from 9:00-10:00 for the first Science Speaker Series of 2012. ACTS is a training company that specializes in improving daily operations in the field of biomedical research as it relates to the care of laboratory animals. ACTS, under Dr. Singleton's direction, has done work with companies like AstraZeneca and Pfizer. Dr. Singleton will speak to students about the use of animals in laboratory research and the kinds of work that can be done in the field of veterinary medicine. Dr. Singleton studied at the University of Maryland and Tuskegee University.
BANK OF AMERICA 2012 STUDENT LEADERS PROGRAM: Boys’ Latin Juniors and Seniors who are passionate about community service are encouraged to apply for Bank of America’s 2012 Student Leaders Program. The program includes: a paid summer internship with a nonprofit organization and an expenses-paid student leadership training in Washington, DC, with presentations and workshops on how nonprofits, business, and government can work together to strengthen communities. They are looking for students who already show signs of community service and leadership. Two hundred student leaders will be selected nationally, and five from the Philadelphia area. The nonprofit internships will be handled through Philadelphia Youth Network. Bank of America is accepting applications until January 25, 2012.
PROGRESS REPORT NIGHT: Progress Report Night will be held on Wednesday, February 1 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Parents will receive additional information on Progress Report Night as well as a copy of the student progress reports in the mail in late January. Progress Report Night is mandatory for the parents of students who are failing two or more classes. As always, if you ever have any questions about your son’s progress, please contact his teacher and check PowerSchool regularly.
PENNSYLVANIA FREE ENTERPRISE WEEK: Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week is a summer program for students interested in learning more about business. Interested sophomores and juniors can apply. Students interested in learning more about the Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week Summer Program should attend an informational meeting on Monday, January 9 during period 3 in the library. MONELL SCIENCE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM: The Monell Chemical Senses Center is the world’s only scientific research institute dedicated to conducting basic research on taste and smell. The mission of the Science Apprentice Program is to stimulate interest in biomedical sciences and medicine as careers, particularly for student groups typically underrepresented in science such as women and minorities. By directly exposing students to basic bench and clinical research, the program provides students with a unique and fun experience that is academically and personally enriching. This is seven weeks (June 18 – August 3) of full-time, paid, structured research activity with a Monell scientist. Qualified students have a strong interest in science and research. STEM SCHOLARS PROGRAM: The STEM Scholars program identifys highly motivated freshman high school students to participate in a four-year concentrated outreach science and engineering program to ensure their long-term pursuit of careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). STEM admits 15 students each year. Students must have a minimum of a 3.0 GP; one letter of recommendation; a personal statement of interest; and an interview to be considered. The deadline to apply is January 15. Interested students can learn more about the program from their science teachers. Applications must be completed electronically at www.fi.edu/STEM-Scholars.
INDOOR TRACK SUCCESS: Congratulations to the success of the Boys’ Latin Indoor Track Team! Oumar Diawara smashed the old school record by running the mile in 5 minutes 18 sections. Shane Gilling ran a blistering 200 meters in the 4 by 200 meter relay; and Jamir Robinson-Marks ran the fastest 800 meter time for Boys’ Latin at 2 minutes 19 sections. Congratulations! |
